Early Years
At 4 years old I emphatically announced to my parents that I was an Artist with a capital “A”! Give me a drawing pad and colored markers, and I was a happy camper for hours. Growing up in New York City, I was surrounded by inspiration, art & culture. My parents took me to museums, theatre and quirky downtown galleries. Throughout my teens I designed greeting cards & posters for events, and did layout for the high school paper and yearbooks. I was destined for a life in the visual arts.
Education
After being accepted into some of the most prestigious art schools in the US, including Pratt Institute in NYC and RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), I decided to pursue my BFA in Graphic Design at the State University of New York, Purchase Collage. I loved it! It was here at SUNY Purchase that I dove into graphic design, minored in photography and printmaking, and explored color theory, typography and illustration. Even though the technology has changed, I still use many of those skills today!
New Tech
I spent my 20s working for two start ups in NY in the fields of computer-graphic design, printing and cutting edge technology. Back then, Macs & PCs were in their infancy and graphic systems cost big bucks. I found I had an aptitude for learning new tech, and helped design graphic software, training programs and sales presentations for trade shows in Europe as well as the US. I worked on the most advanced tech of the time, particularly in the fields of package design and photo retouching.
Packaging It
Focus on packaging and marketing become the theme of my endeavors over the next two decades. Working full time for a boutique design agency in CT gave me the opportunity to hone my craft, collaborate creatively, manage projects & teams and produce projects for notable clients such as Motorola, Altec Lansing, Pepperidge Farm, Office Depot, etc. I became a mentor to younger designers and trained others to use technology effectively and creatively. And, secretly, my heart longed for more…
Dream it
As I was at the top of my game as a Senior Designer, I also realized that my work/life balance was lacking equilibrium, and that my love of yoga, the earth and sustainable living were not aligned with what I was creating in the world! So in 2006 I decided to take a leap-of-faith and start my own business. Thus Fish Cat Design was born. Clients sometime ask why the name Fish Cat Design? Fish Cat started as an affectionate nickname, something about purring when I’m in water, and not taking myself too seriously. I recognized that I wanted to attract different clients, not necessarily high tech & corporate clients I’d been working with, but rather the leaders, visionaries, healers, musicians, authors and educators. So the whimsical name stuck.
Over the last 15 years I’ve had the chance to work with the most amazing business owners, entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations - all who are doing their good work in the world. It is my true honor to apply my experience and talents to your unique projects and help you manifest YOUR brilliance into the world! Let me know what you’re dreaming of below, and let’s make it a reality!
